Their Journey To America

Hannah Stanton was born in Kerry County, Ireland in 1830. She had moved to England with her family where she met and married Jeremiah Canty. At the time, Jeremiah was in England looking for work. Hannah and Jeremiah were married on May 27th, 1851, at the Roman Catholic Chapel in the District of Popular, County of Middlesex, London, England. While in England two of their eight children, Thomas and Maria, were born on April 24th, 1854, and January 25th, 1856, respectively. Around 1856, Jeremiah decided to come to America to work and save enough money to bring his family over. In American, Jeremiah first settled in Detroit, Michigan as a laborer. At the time he left England, his wife, Hanna, was pregnant with their third child, Margaret which she gave birth to on June 21st, 1857. Soon afterwards, Hanna and her three children left England to be with her husband in America. It was a long and hard journey for them but after a month boat ride and what seemed an endless caravan going west, they were finally reunited with Jermiah in Detroit, Michigan. There they gave birth to their fourth child, Catherine, on Feb 12, 1858. By 1860, the Canty family had moved to Lodi, Wisconsin where the twins, Eleanor and Edward were born, and on May 31, 1864, Eugene Francis joined the family on May 31, 1864. The family finally settled in Iowa where their last child, Elizabeth was born on August 1, 1867. Jeremiah and Hanna had two more sets of twins that died and were buried in Wisconsin.
