Eugene Francis Canty was born in Lodi, Wisconsin on May 31, 1864 to parents Jeremiah Canty and Hannah Stanton. He moved to Lawler, Iowa where he met and married a woman named Rose Ann O'Byrne. Rose was born in Lawler, Iowa on January 24, 1866. Eugene spent his life farming in Lawler and together, with Rose Ann, had eight children: two boys named William Byron and Eugene Vincent, and six girls named Marie Genevieve, Madonna Bernadette, Florence Ann, Pearl Gertrude, Marguerite Rose, and Leona Josephine. William Byron died as an infant at the age of 1. Leona Josephene dedicated her life to the Catholic Church as a Nun.
