Their Journey To America
Patrick Sheridan was born on March 17th, 1851 in County Cavan, Ireland. He emigrated to America around 1870, settled in eastern Iowa, and became a farmer. Around 1877 he moved to Britt, Hancock County, Iowa where he met and eventually married Margaret Canty (daughter of Owen Canty and Ellen Stanton). Together they had seven children of their own, four girls named Margaret, Irene, Mabel, and Glenne, and three boys named Eugene Sylvester, John Francis, and Arthur Edward. Their youngest son, Arthur Edward, became one of Iowa's most prominent lawyers. The possibility that General Sheridan of the Union Army (during the Civil War) may be related is still being investigated.
