James Francis O'Brien was born in Cedarburg, Wisconsin on December 8, 1848 to parents William O'Brien and Mary Kelly. Sometime during his travels he settled in Lawler, Iowa where he met and married a woman named Maria Canty. James was a farmer and Maria was a teacher. Together, James and Maria had eight children, four boys named Thomas Francis, Edward John, William Joseph, and William Patrick and four girls named Mary Genevieve, Ellen Theresa, Anna Eugena, and Maggie. Their daughters, Mary and Ellen married two men from the Walsh family, Francis and William, respectively.
