Introduction Into Our Family History

When one's family history contains as many namesakes as ours it is difficult to know where to begin. The common thread among all our family names appears to be the origin and birthplace of our ancestors -- Ireland, and as such, this is a good place to start. Much of the information about our Irish heritage was obtained from Mrs. Barbara Walsh's book entitled "Sharing Our Heritage" and researched by my Aunt Signora Goss.

Ireland is also known as the Emerald Isle. It is called this because of its beautiful green countryside. Rolling farmlands, which are mainly pasture, cover much of the central part of the country, and mountains rise near the coasts. Ireland is divided into 26 counties, and some of the counties are known for special features. For example, County Kerry is famous for its mountains and the scenic Lakes of Killarney; County Waterford is known for its delicate cut glass; and County Donegal is famous for its tweed cloth. In the past, hundreds of thousands of people left Ireland because of limited jobs available there. Visions of the United States as the "Land of Opportunity" lured our ancestors to this country where they kept their Irish heritage and culture. Their stories are told here.....

My mother's maiden name is Goss and as such, the figure below shows how the Goss family originated from the Canty's, O'Byrne's, Stanton's, and Mullen's. The O'Brien's, Walsh's, Reilly's, and Sheridan's are part of our extended family. To find out the origin of each name and our ancestors journey to America, please click on their name.
