The John J. Walsh Family
  

Their Journey To America

        The bloodline of the Walsh ancestors originated in Carrick, Ireland on Suir, a village situated on the north bank of the River Suir. The river forms a boundary between the counties of Tipperary and Waterford. John J. Walsh was born to this family on November 3rd, 1848. He was the youngest of three sons. Shortly after his father died, John left home and worked for a steamship company around the docks of Ireland. He later, worked on a freighter where he spent seven years on the high seas between New York and Liverpool, England. Around 1871, tired of traveling the seas, John took up residence in New York where he drove a stage between Albany and Troy. John left New York and went west where he finally ended up in Vail, Iowa. There he married Elizabeth Lane and both farmed in this region for about twenty-four years. Together they had twelve children. Two of their children, Francis Paul and William Adrain married two from the O'Brien family. Francis Walsh married Mary O'Brien on June 18th, 1917 and William Walsh married Ellen O'Brien on February 6th, 1923.
