Their Journey To America
Hugh Mullen was born in County Monaghan, Ireland on April 15th 1801. He married a woman named Mary Donahue who was also believed to be born in County Monaghan, Ireland in 1804. Hugh and Mary came to America in 1849. Two of their daughters, Mary and Rose arrived in New York first, on the ship Elisinor and landed on August 22. The rest of the family arrived in Boston a month later on the ship Plymouth Rock. They initially settled in West Troy, Albany County, New York. But sometime between 1850 and 1860 Hugh and Mary moved to Raymond Township in Racine County, Wisconsin and later around 1864 the family moved to Chickasaw County, Iowa. Hugh and Mary had six children: four girls named Mary, Elizabeth, Rose, and Bridget; and two boys named Michael and Bernard.
